Chapter Sixteen
Dear Mr. Langley,
Thank you for your note. I would be happy to accept your offer. I can be available any time that is convenient for you.
I stopped writing. Something was nagging at me. I wanted to accept the position, to begin my life without Mr. Findlayâor anyone elseâdeciding my fate. I wanted to earn my own money and build a future for myself. But my heart ached to think of leaving Elsie when she needed me. She was hurting over Mr. Andersonâs departure from London. They would be leaving for Scotland in a week, and she would be all alone there, without the balm of friendship. In truth, I wished to stay with her. But it had been well over a week, and Mr. Findlay still had yet to make up his mind. No matter how much time I spent with him, how close I felt we had become, he still had not said a word about me coming with them to Scotland.
Leaning back in the chair, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a second. Then I left my room to spend some time in the library. Elsie had decided to spend the day in her room catching up on correspondence, so I was left to my own devices. It actually worked out well, given that I, too, had correspondence to write.
After entering the library, I browsed the shelves, running my fingers over the spines of the colorful volumes. I suppose I should have not been surprised when Mr. Findlay found me there; he spent much of his time in the library. I idly wondered if I had hoped to see him there. Given how I felt about him, it was likely.
âHullo, Miss White.â He bowed.
âMr. Findlay,â I said, curtsying.
âWhat are you looking for? Anything I can help with?â Mr. Findlay moved closer to me and eyed the shelves, as if I had already told him what I was looking for.
âNo, nothing in particular. I was just browsing. I like to do that now and again.â I pulled up a corner of my mouth.
When he looked at me, his mouth did the same side-smile. He turned to me fully and leaned a shoulder on the bookshelf. âWhat have you been up to today?â
âNothing in particular,â I repeated myself.
He chuckled. âI see. You spend the whole morning in your room, do not speak to anyone, and then you donât even wish to tell me anything about how you spend your time.â
I chose a book at random and maneuvered around him, but he turned and followed me to the table.
âCome. Tell me all your secrets. What do you do when you are alone?â
âMr. Findlay, that is most impolite to ask of a young lady. It is none of your business.â
He sighed. âIndeed, it is none of my business. But that does not make me any less curious.â
After sitting at the table, I looked up at him squarely. âWell, I might as well inquire as to your activities. You hole up in your study for hours at a time and never tell me what you are up to in there.
